#LetsBeReal, Filipina Mothers (Nurture Run on April 13 @ QC Circle)

Press Release

We’ve all been told that breastfeeding’s best for babies; but why are less than half of Filipina mothers opting for exclusive breastfeeding?

Reality bites, and in fact, recent figures released by the Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI-DOST) say that breastfeeding rates are at 47 percent and more alarmingly, there are actually areas in the country that have breastfeeding rates of only 27 percent. That’s 7 out of 10 mothers who opt for infant formulas and other artificial milk substitutes.

Beauty, Brains and Breastfeeding together with UNICEF are looking to shift this mindset. “Filipina mothers aren’t keeping it real and we want to help change that,” says Iza Abeja, Executive Director of Beauty, Brains & Breastfeeding.

Nurture Run

In keeping with the thrust to promote, support and protect the rights of the breastfeeding mother and child, BBB is organizing the Nurture Run, one of the biggest breastfeeding awareness initiatives in the country to date. More than 10,000 runners and breastfeeding advocates are expected to join Nurture Run.

Iza also shares that proceeds of the Nurture Run will go to mobilizing skilled counselors, sustaining mommy groups and organizing breastfeeding awareness activities as well as supporting Milk Banks through Milk Letting Days.
“All these initiatives will be carried out in strategic areas in the country specifically in disaster prone provinces,” notes Iza. “As the recent disasters in Tacloban, Bohol and Zamboanga have taught us, breastmilk can save lives.”

The Nurture Run is set on April 13, 2014 Sunday from 5:30 am to 10:00 am at the Quezon Memorial Circle.  It covers 3km and 5km options with race kits costing PHP 450.00 inclusive of the race bib and Nurture Run shirt. The event is co-presented by UNICEF, International Labour Organization (ILO), National Nutrition Cluster group for Haiyan/Yolanda and Department of Health (DOH) in coordination with venue-host the Quezon City Government.

“Our children deserve the most genuine form of care and nutrition they can get. Support breastfeeding and help us spread the word by joining the ‘Nurture Run.’”

New adidas apparel lowers your temperature and raises your game

Press Release

March 20, 2014 – Today, adidas launched a revolution in active cooling technology, the adidas Climachill™ range. The range incorporates an innovative fabric using titanium and 3D aluminium cooling spheres. The technology provides an instant ‘chill’ effect to help athletes’s performance in warm conditions lowering their body temperature so they can train harder, run longer, retain their focus and compete better.

adidas understands the importance of temperature management to make athletes better and for the first time used evaporation and conduction methods together.  Revolutionary aluminium cooling spheres are strategically located to correspond with the warmest area of the body, cooling skin down upon contact. In addition to the aluminium dots, the ground-breaking SubZero flat yarn contains titanium and is woven throughout the inside of each Climachill™ jersey, delivering up to 36 % more cooling capacity*.

The range was rigorously tested in the state of the art adidas ‘Clima’ chamber, with temperatures as high as 50°C. By using a 35-degree ‘hot plate’ to simulate critical functions of the human skin, adidas were able to determine a pre-selection of functional fabrics to find the ultimate Climachill™ fabric.

The Climachill™ technology goes on sale worldwide from 1 April within various categories including; Men’s, Women’s and Kid’s Training, as well as Tennis and Outdoor wear. The key pieces in the Climachill™ product range are the Men’s Training t-shirt and the Women’s Tennis top.

David Beckham, Climachill™ ambassador commented on the new range: ‘Playing and training in extreme conditions can be very challenging both mentally and physically. In my time as a player I have played in cold conditions in the North of England and in very hot climate in the US – weather can really make a difference to an athlete’s performance. The technology used in the Climachill™ range will really help athletes concentrate on their game so they can perform at their best, even in the harshest of conditions.’

Heike Leibl, adidas SVP for Training added: ‘At adidas we are constantly striving to create innovations to make the athlete comfortable so they can focus on performance. The Aluminium Cooling Spheres used in the Climachill™ range provide an instant ‘chill’ effect to keep the athlete at their peak optimum temperature to perform at their best in any conditions.”

The new adidas Climachill™ range will be available in the Philippines starting April 15 in leading adidas and sports stores nationwide.

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC CHANNEL RUNS STRONG WITH EARTH DAY RUN YEAR 5!

Press Release

On April 27, 2014, National Geographic Channel (NGC) renews its commitment to the environment by celebrating this year’s Earth Day (which falls on April 22 globally) with another round of its wildly successful Earth Day Run. Now on its fifth year, Earth Day Run is expected to attract 12,000 running enthusiasts of all ages and fitness levels to participate for the good of the environment.

Earth Day Run has consistently been besting its record for number of participants, with last year’s expected number of 10,000 runners demolished by an actual registered 12,000 participants. NGC hopes to replicate that success for Earth Day Run 2014 by registering 12,000 runners in the 3K, 5K, 10K and 21K categories, including a new fifth category of 42K designed to draw the most physically fit and expert runners in the country. The event itself is considered one of the biggest runs in the Philippines.

This year, NGC is working once again with its environmental partner, World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), to make a solid difference in the Philippines’ environmental footprint and give sustainable livelihood opportunities for local communities. Last year, the two organizations used proceeds of the Earth Day Run to plant P1 million worth of fruit-bearing trees in the Abuan watershed in Isabela, in the Sierra Madre region. Besides partial reforestation of this important resource, local farmers were given the privilege to own and care for the trees as well as harvest their fruits for their income. In 2014, NGC promises to raise money  for WWF’s Bancas For The Philippines project, which aims to train fishermen affected by Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) last November 2013 in the making and use of fiberglass boats for artisanal fishing. These boats are designed to withstand the onslaught of typhoons to ensure that the fishermen can continue with their livelihood in any event.

WWF’s experts will train fishermen on site and help them build the fiberglass boats while reducing the use of sawn timber and plywood, in the hopes that the communities can produce one boat per day. Many fishermen were left with no sources of income when their boats were destroyed by Haiyan, and so this project is a significant step toward the rehabilitation of communities in Palawan, which was ravaged by the typhoon last November but slow to receive relief due to the sheer number of islands in central Philippines that needed to recover from the devastation. Earth Day Run 2014 aims to help these fishermen directly with the sharing of climate-smart technology that will help them recover their livelihood, as well as decrease the fishing pressure on our seas that have been heavily exploited by commercial fishing by promoting artisanal fishing for small-scale fishermen.

Earth Day Run uses recyclable materials for its race bibs and a “Zero Paper” registration process in the form of a Centralized Registration System, which National Geographic pioneered in the country. Participants can support the Haiyan rehabilitation efforts of NGC and WWF by signing up on www.natgeorun.com or visiting the sign-up booth at the Lower Ground floor of SM Aura from March 1 to April 20. Finishers of the longer races of 21K and 42K can not only take pride in their physical victory and willingness to help Haiyan survivors and the environment, but they will also each be getting a medal and finisher’s shirt to commemorate their triumph.

Nearly four months after Typhoon Haiyan, those affected by it still need so much help, and it has become important to sustain the public’s interest in their rehabilitation. Earth Day Run 2014 invites all runners to register and do their part while enjoying the health benefits of good exercise and unity in supporting the survivors of one of the most devastating natural disasters in the country’s history.

Endless Energy Begins with BOOST™

Press Release
adidas Continues to Expand its Energy Running Footprint

Herzogenaurach, Germany (February 2014) – Inspired by insight and driven by demand, adidas BOOST™ cushioning technology delivers the Energy Running solution that today’s runners are chasing.

As they hit the roads, tracks and trails in record numbers, today’s runners are seeking more from their runs and more from their running shoes. To answer the call, adidas and partner BASF, the world’s leading chemical company, developed BOOST foam cushioning that returns more energy than any other foam cushioning in the running industry. By using thousands of eye-catching energy capsules BOOST has changed running forever.

BOOST technology forges the qualities of performance cushioning and responsiveness that runners were previously forced to choose between. Energy BOOST, the first shoe to feature BOOST technology was unleashed last February and continues to provide runners with a unique Energy Running experience.

“BOOST has blazed the trail for Energy Running and reflects adidas’ commitment to strategic performance innovation,” said Eric Liedtke, adidas head of performance. “As the shoe that helped us introduce BOOST, Energy BOOST demonstrates the elaborate research and cutting edge development required to satisfy today’s Energy Running crave.”

BOOST was developed to remain consistently cushioned and incredibly responsive through sub-zero cold to punishing heat. Testing conducted by the adidas Innovation Team (aIT) revealed that, when taken from +40 to -20 degrees Celsius, BOOST foam is three times more temperature-resistant than standard EVA material, providing a more consistent run.

The upper of Energy BOOST features adidas Techfit, highly durable elastic polyurethane that provides optimal comfort and support to the entire foot while in motion. The formfitting, breathable mesh material offers the fit of a sock, while engineered powerbands across the upper provide targeted support and stabilization.

Energy BOOST also includes an extended TORSION® system from heel to toe which helps minimize roll for stability. This feature works with an external heel counter, which maximizes the heel fit and comfort during runs.

On February 26, adidas will unveil the first wave of new Energy BOOST colorways with a second series in March to complement its state-of-the-art Energy Running technology.

The new collection of miCoach compatible Energy BOOST colorways will retail for PHP 7995 and will be available at leading adidas and sports stores nationwide.

Ehhh @ Crystal Beach, Zambales

We had fallen for surfing that we hadn't stopped exploring places in the country to surf in. After visiting La Union, Baler and Liw-Liwa, we checked out Crystal Beach Resort in San Narciso, Zambales. I was expecting this place to be better than the small hostel in Liw-Liwa because of the price but I was in for a surprise.

Exploring Crystal Beach

We stayed in a half of our tree house for almost P500/person. It was a fun experience but it wasn't comfortable. Most of us had to lean down and crawl in order to move in our accommodation and the other r group were given a cottage to sleep in so we decided to all stay in the small tree house.

The place also offered lots of activities like beach volleyball, trampoline, log climbing and a lot more. Some of the activities required additional expense. In my opinion, those special activities are not that interesting but it was nice to have.

The bathing area wasn't a good one since it was an outdoor shower. It was still cold in that night so bathing the day when we weren't swimming or getting wet in the beach was a challenge (and may mga hindi naligo at naligo sa CR).

On the other hand, the beach was clean and peaceful, too.

Pawicare: Pawikan Conservation Effort

A few minutes from the resort, a conservation venue for the pawikan. In the afternoon of our stay, we had the opportunity to help baby pawikans on their way to the ocean. We all lined up by the seashore with a baby pawikan in hand and we let them in the ocean. It was a great experience.

Surfing

We stayed in the resort for the first long weekend of the year so all the rooms were taken and the surfing schedules in their resident surfing school was almost full. Luckily, we scored a schedule before noon.

They were strict with the inland instruction to ensure everyone's safety. Like all other lessons, the instructor oriented us on the parts of the surf boars, how to stand and how to fall. Since they over booked so the 4 (Ed, Drew, Rodel and I) of us had to surf without leashes which required the head instructors to guide us. The waves on our side of the beach weren't plenty and we had to endure some failed attempts at riding the waves since the waves wouldn't be there. But master student Ed and Drew were trying to get some new moves (kaya sila na matuturo next time, LOL) while we struggled to surf with the short surfing waves we found.

It was still a fun experience and hopefully the next surfing trip would have better waves for the beginner surfers.

We also celebrated Rodel and Raymon's birthday on that trip (Thanks sa treat!)
