Alaska World Milk Day

Press Release

Healthy, Set, Go!

Alaska celebrates World Milk Day on June 1 with a simultaneous milk-drinking activity nationwide; a family charity run in BGC; health and fitness programs in Baguio, Cebu and Davao; and an online milk moustache advocacy project

On June 1, the country will celebrate Alaska World Milk Day for the second time. Spearheaded by the  Philippines’ leading milk company Alaska Milk Corporation, the celebration promises to be bigger and better than the fete last year, which gathered more than 3,000 participants in its fun run and raised the same number of milk products for the feeding program of Children’s Hour and its partner organizations.

This year, Alaska World Milk Day goes nationwide with a simultaneous milk-drinking activity in Baguio, Cebu, Davao and Metro Manila at 7:30 am, projected to gather thousands of participants. There will also be simultaneous fitness classes in the three provinces to encourage individuals and families to start a morning health and fitness regimen: Zumba + power breakfast of Alaska powdered milk paired with champorado drizzled with Alaska Evaporated Milk, pandesal filled with Alaska Condensed milk, and cereals with Alaska Fresh Milk. The power breakfast are given free to participants at the event area as part of the “Alaska Gatas for Breakfast” campaign, which will be held for the first time this year. The campaign aims to get everyone to start the day right with a nutritious breakfast.

This effort to foster a healthy consciousness among individuals and families—through the combination of exercise and proper nutritious—is Alaska’s way in helping the government fight against the increasing number of obese children and adults in the country. According to the Department of Health (DOH) and the Department of Science and Technology—Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI), obesity is one of the most prevalent nutritional problems of Filipino children and adults. At least 16 million Filipinos 20 years old and above, and two out of 10 children are overweight.

In Manila, the same Alaska power breakfast is given to the participants of the Alaska Family charity run that will benefit Children’s Hour, a fundraising organization that encourages individuals and companies for donations of at least one hour's worth of their earnings for programs dedicated to make the lives of disadvantaged children better. Aimed at getting today's children and their parents to get off their couch, leave their gadgets for the day and engage in physical activity, the Alaska Family Run will be held at the Bonifacio Global City. For every participant, Alaska will be donating milk products to the organization for its feeding program.

Everyone is encouraged to join the “Gatas for Breakfast” campaign and help combat obesity and malnutrition in the country by posting their photos with a milk moustache online with the hashtags #alaskaworldmilkday,  #WMD2014, #MilkSelfie and #GatasForBreakfast - especially during the breakfast activity at 7:30 am of June 1.

The Alaska World Milk Day celebration is part of Alaska’s continuing advocacy toward health and nutrition, particularly its Nutrition. Action. Champion campaign. For more information, log on to www.alaskaworldmilkday.com and like www.facebook.com/WorldMilkDayPH

#LetsBeReal, Filipina Mothers (Nurture Run on April 13 @ QC Circle)

Press Release

We’ve all been told that breastfeeding’s best for babies; but why are less than half of Filipina mothers opting for exclusive breastfeeding?

Reality bites, and in fact, recent figures released by the Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI-DOST) say that breastfeeding rates are at 47 percent and more alarmingly, there are actually areas in the country that have breastfeeding rates of only 27 percent. That’s 7 out of 10 mothers who opt for infant formulas and other artificial milk substitutes.

Beauty, Brains and Breastfeeding together with UNICEF are looking to shift this mindset. “Filipina mothers aren’t keeping it real and we want to help change that,” says Iza Abeja, Executive Director of Beauty, Brains & Breastfeeding.

Nurture Run

In keeping with the thrust to promote, support and protect the rights of the breastfeeding mother and child, BBB is organizing the Nurture Run, one of the biggest breastfeeding awareness initiatives in the country to date. More than 10,000 runners and breastfeeding advocates are expected to join Nurture Run.

Iza also shares that proceeds of the Nurture Run will go to mobilizing skilled counselors, sustaining mommy groups and organizing breastfeeding awareness activities as well as supporting Milk Banks through Milk Letting Days.
“All these initiatives will be carried out in strategic areas in the country specifically in disaster prone provinces,” notes Iza. “As the recent disasters in Tacloban, Bohol and Zamboanga have taught us, breastmilk can save lives.”

The Nurture Run is set on April 13, 2014 Sunday from 5:30 am to 10:00 am at the Quezon Memorial Circle.  It covers 3km and 5km options with race kits costing PHP 450.00 inclusive of the race bib and Nurture Run shirt. The event is co-presented by UNICEF, International Labour Organization (ILO), National Nutrition Cluster group for Haiyan/Yolanda and Department of Health (DOH) in coordination with venue-host the Quezon City Government.

“Our children deserve the most genuine form of care and nutrition they can get. Support breastfeeding and help us spread the word by joining the ‘Nurture Run.’”

Join the World Vision Run 2013 and help make a child's life better!

On June 23, 2013, Run Rio and World Vision are organizing a run at the Bonifacio Global City. This is aims to promote World Vision and help thousands of children in their education and their communities' development. Join now!

Details of the race are here.

World Vision is my favorite charity

World Vision is a Christian relief, development and advocacy organisation dedicated to working with children, families and communities to overcome poverty and injustice. This organization is close to my heart as I currently sponsor a child in their care. They support a community and find sponsors for each kid in the community. As a sponsor, you only have to donate P600 monthly (P7,200 annually or P20 daily). The organization will take care of helping your sponsored kid. You could get in touch with them and offer them inspiration to doing great at school, leading to a better future for them and the country. Who knows you might be sponsoring the next president or hero.

Meet Janine.

She's my sponsored child. I started giving P600 monthly to World Vision when I was fortunate enough to get a pay raise. Janine was Grade 1, then. She's now in Grade 5. From her progress card, she's doing great in school and she loves to dance. She also loves shoes. Every Christmas season, World Vision gives us sponsors an opportunity to give our kids and their family a great Christmas by purchasing an Noche Buena Package which contains a set of food and drinks for the season, as well as a gift for our kid. Janine always gets shoes. Once, she even proudly shared how she used the pair she got for a school dance.

Join World Vision Run now and help make a child's future brighter! If you can't make it on the run, consider sponsoring a child or making a one time donation. For more details, please get in touch with World Vision by visiting their website, calling (2) 3747618 to 28 or visiting their booth on the World Vision Run 2013 events.

Note: 100% of the proceeds are going to World Vision. Run Rio even waived their admin fee to support this great cause so don't think about the (registration) cost, think about the cause. Also if you are not particular with where the money goes, you'll experience a great race with Run Rio (as usual), wear a quality singlet and even bright home a rocking finisher's medal (for 21k runners only).

August 12 at the SM Mall of Asia grounds, featuring a new category,
more prizes and exciting features.

Get ready to outrun yourself at the Rexona Run 2012 happening on August 12 at the SM Mall of Asia grounds.  A part of the Runrio Series, this year’s edition is bigger, with a new category, more prizes and exciting features that will bring running to a higher level.

Registration is ongoing until July 29 at Riovana stores in Bonifacio Global City and Katipunan, and Toby’s branches in Trinoma and SM Mall of Asia.  Online registrations are also accepted at www.runrio.com from now until 12 midnight of July 22.

Runners can choose to take part in the 5K, 21K Solo or, for the first time ever, the 21K Relay race category.  The top 3 finishers in the 21K Solo take home Php 7,000, 5,500, and 4,000; while Php 5,000, 4,000, and 3,000 will be awarded to each member of the top finishers in the 21K Relay division.  Finally, the top three finishers in the 5K category bring home Php 4,000 for first, 3,000 for second and 2,000 for third.

Adding excitement to the event is Rexona’s challenge for runners to beat the “industry standard,” wherein commemorative key chains will be given to finishers who end the race on or before the recommended finishing time.  To qualify, 5K runners must cross the finish line on or before 6:20am, 30 minutes from gun start and all 21K runners need to finish on or before 7:00am, 2 hours after gun start.

To ensure that each participant keeps within their target finishing time, pacers shall be deployed for each race category.

To help runners train and commit to a faster finishing time, Rexona Run 2012 has created the Rexona Run Outrun Yourself App, which can be downloaded for free via the Rexona Men Facebook page.  The app helps runners set a target time for the category to be run courtesy of a running playlist and an occasional voice over as their time check, which they can listen to while training.  During the actual run, the app can also be used to help runners set their pace.

Rexona will also encourage participants to be responsible runners by keeping race routes trash-free by placing trash bins in strategic locations for proper disposal of water bottles, sponges and other trash.  This ensures a cleaner race route now and in succeeding editions of Rexona Run.

For more details, check out the Rexona Men Facebook page, visit www. runrio.com or call/text the race hotline at +63927-347-7700 (Globe), +63929-717-8164 (Smart) or +632-887-6194 .

Rexona Run 2012 challenges you to outrun yourself

Press Release

Prepare to push yourself to the limits when Rexona Run 2012 unfolds on August 12 at the SM Mall of Asia grounds, featuring a new category, more prizes and exciting features.

Prepare to push yourself to the limits when Rexona Run 2012 unfolds on August 12 at the SM Mall of Asia grounds.  Presented by Rexona Men, the much-anticipated event promises to raise the bar even higher.  With a new category, more prizes and exciting features that will surely test the mettle of even the most seasoned runners.

Participants can choose from among three race categories: 5K, 21K Solo and for the first time ever, the 21K Relay.  The new category is designed to inspire 5K and 10K runners to raise their level by taking part in the more challenging 21K race, where a team of 2 runners will run a relay for them to finish the 21K distance.

Apart from cash prizes and medals for the top finishers, commemorative key chains will also be awarded to finishers who manage to beat the recommended finishing time for a challenge.  To qualify, 5K runners must cross the finish line 30 minutes after gun start at 6:20am, and all 21K participants need to finish within 2 hours at 7:00am.

To ensure that each participant keeps within their target finishing time, pacers shall be deployed for each race category.

Helping runners train and commit to a faster finishing time, Rexona Run 2012 has created the Rexona Run Outrun Yourself App, which can be downloaded for free via the Rexona Men Facebook page.  The app will help runners set a target time for the category to be run courtesy of a running playlist and occasional voice over as their time check, which they can listen to while training.  During the actual run, the app can also be used to help runners set their pace.

More than just promoting wellness through running, Rexona also strongly espouses the responsible running.  For Rexona Run 2012, trash bins will be placed in strategic locations so runners can properly discard used water bottles, sponges and other trash.  This gives runners a cleaner and more pleasant race route, now and in succeeding editions of Rexona Run.

“Each year, Rexona manages to raise the bar and this year will be no different.  We not only made this year’s race fun, exciting and safe, but we’re also introducing new developments that will surely inspire running enthusiasts, both professional and recreational types, to strive to outrun themselves,” says Rexona brand manager Anne Remulla.

Pex Running Club's SSD and LSD Activity

Pex Running Club holds monthly training in the form of team SSD (short slow distance - pauso ng PRC) and LSD (long slow distance) running. We agree on weekend date, time and venue then, meet up and run as a group.

February Training

On February 19, 2012, we went back to CCP on a Sunday morning to hold the 2nd team training. Due to last minute invites for the PDA run. We shrinked our expected number of attendees to 6. Active Members (Cath, Gerard, Kaye, Sein, Ian and Mia) had ran 3k around the CCP complex with a bit of uphill training. They changed the original 10k route since the sun was already too high at 7am. (Dapat wag malalate...)

 Cool down after the run

I was on bag guarding duties again but Kaye lent me her Top 10 book so I was laughing my ass off while waiting for them to finish their run.

 PRC Cheering Squad

After their run, we goofed a little before heading for breakfast in the nearby Harbour square. PDA runners, CJ and Jomari joined us. Enrichard also went with his autographed Top 10 book.

March Training

On March 10, 2012, we went to UP Diliman to hold SSD/LSD running team activity. We scheduled it in a Saturday afternoon just to veer away from our normal Sunday morning runs. I turns out that this was a great idea since this activity became the most attended one with the most number of newbies since our running clinic.

 Let's go 5k SSD group

Coach Drew also graced us with his presence so we strictly followed the 5k and 10k route.

Let's do this, 10k LSD group

I was finally able to run in this activity and was tasked to be the sweeper for the 10k runners. I made sure to be the last runner for 10k. For the first round, we ran with the 5k runners and was on our own on the 2nd round. Since I should be the last runner, I did my share of slow running and walking combo. On a turn we sort of got lost since the head of the pack was running faster and we couldn't find them. But since UP is easy to ask around for directions we made our way back to the route. We even got a cone of ice cream on our way to the assembly place which was the UP oblation.

 PRC Conquers UP

In PRC tradition, we had dinner together in the UP Technohub place.

Next Training

We scheduled the next PRC Team Training on April 28 or 29. More details to follow in this link.

Also, check our sub-forum.
