What a great Run United 2 Day!

Run United 2 2012 is the second installment of the Run United Trilogy Run that was held on June 17, 2012 at BGC Grounds to SM Mall of Asia.

Pre-Race

As I previously mentioned, the original target time for this race was a 2:30 finish, which would give us (with pacer, CJ) a new PR. But our efforts from our test run proved that having no training can't produce an actual personal record. So we just wanted to finish the race. The week before I avoided straining my body, I loaded on carbo (yum, yum at food) and I avoided alcohol (nagbabantay si TL Drew).

Race Proper

I got up extra early to avoid being late at gun start and possibly missing the start time so I aimed to be at the venue, BGC, at the assembly time. At the time, I was in a crunch to find fellow Titan Veluz as he'll be returning my singlet. Since I was meeting him, I was able to squeeze into the baggage bus line. (Thanks a lot friends!) I met pacers, CJ and Drew, as well as running blogger friends, Team Alpha One Noel and UlikblogRunner Banjo who were hanging out near Riovana. We chatted a bit before heading to the middle of the first wave. We lost Noel and Banjo but CJ, Drew and I were running at the same pace for the first kilometer. But somewhere in the middle of the 2nd kilometer, we couldn't catch up with Drew who was gunning for a sub-2 finish so CJ and I continued to run for the first 8 kilometers at an easy pace until we found Petron Buendia and started to 4:1 galloway until the finish line. It was also at that time that the rain which welcomed us on gun start started to drizzle down and the sun was slowly on its way. It was my first time to go on such a route so the experience was welcoming. We found friends from other teams on the way,  little running teacher, ex-**** ni secret and many more.

 With Pacer CJ

As spoiled Pinoy runners, we were treated with cold Powerade and water, served by Coach Rio in the CCP area. Finishing at 2 hours and 42 minutes. It was a PR for me. YEY!

Post Race

 Post Race With PRC

Wearing my 1st 21k finisher's medal (shirt lang kasi sa 1st 21k ko), we made our way to the expo where we met friends from the Pex Running Club. We took as many pictures as we could. I was able to go around the expo for a bit. I was able to freshen up in a Rexona Booth. There was a shower area but you had to wait a long time for your turn. There were booths from different sponsors you had the usual sponsors, canned tuna, multivitamins, etc. There were even fitness sponsors, including 360 Fitness Club, FTX Gym and PoleCats.

Race Review

Post Race with PRC at Gerry's

Run Rio races are great examples on what a great race day should be and RU2 didn't fail to our expectations. The medal was big and worthy of showing off your achievement, even more so if you had ran RU1 and will run RU3. The race route was unique with a different start and finish line. The hydration was enough for the Filipino spoiled runners who got cold water and cold energy drinks each 1.5km. The whole race was closely monitored by Run Rio president. He even helped in giving out the drinks.

Congrats to all RU2 Finishers!

What's next?

During my first Sunday in Delaware, my uncle visited me and invited me to join the Philadelphia Rock and Roll Half Marathon. He said it will definitely be more expensive but the run would be worth the experience since the route would travel around the city. At the end of the run, we would have a rock and roll band to celebrate the achievement.

After our Sunday dinner, I browsed through the Philly Half Marathon website and signed up for the race. It is definitely much more expensive but it will be worth the experience and the bragging rights. (By the way, Cobra Starship will headline the event.)

But since I had spent a lot on this run, I am gunning for a sub-2 finish. I'll be starting my training later. The plan was a 10 week something my uncle emailed me. It came for Runner's World.

So Wish me Luck!

My 360 Fitness Club Addiction

I first found out about this concept gym at a Men's Health Philippines issue. It basically featured how you will have a complete workout at 30 minutes and it caught my attention. I can be busy and having an option to get all of my workout done in 30 minutes caught my attention. It took me a while to try out this gym since it's first location was in "far far away" Ortigas. When the Makati branch opened, I was doing workout at home routines so a gym didn't interest me much. But when I came across their booth in a fun run, I signed up for a trial and check out the workout. See my initial review here.

I decided to not to join the club since it wasn't in my budget and I was pretty motivated to work out on my own then. Earlier this year after my membership in another gym expired, I came back to 360 Fitness and joined. I was able to get 20% off my dues as they were running in a promo at the time I registered.

I was pretty much used to circuit training at my previous gym so it was easy for me to adapt to the programs. The classes are also scheduled at fitting intervals so I was able to attend some of them regularly.

Circuit Training

Circuit Training  is a series of exercises that is done 30 seconds each. Each exercise is a "station". Even stations are strength training exercises that concentrates on a muscle group, use an equipment or a body weight exercise. Odd stations are active rest stations that are composed cardio exercises that is done in high intensity instead of actual rest. Each round is done in 10 minutes and you are prescribed to do 3 rounds so you could get a 30 minute workout. But you could do more if you want.

What I like about this sort of training is that you get a full body workout on a short time. You just have to exert yourself to 60%-80% of your maximum heart rate.It takes little time and lots of effort so you're pretty much set for a couple of days after the workout.

STC

I really love my suspension training class from my previous gym so having this option at 360 Fitness Club delighted me. Granted that the class was way easier than Rip 60 class, STC was more than exercising using a jungle gym. STC is an interval training class that makes use of your bodyweight, a kettlebell and the jungle gym, a suspension training tool, so it was its own level. I was able to attend classes of different coaches and they have a different program so if you'll be attending both Wednesday and Friday classes you'll be doing different things.

Unfortunately, STC classes has a 10 person limit so you have to get in early at the gym and have your name signed at the sign up sheet. Slots fill up fast so there are lots of times that I wasn't able to attend.

One Run, One Family, One La Salle (Orofols) 3

Last June 10, 2012, the De La Salle Alumni Office had organized a fun run called One Run, One Family, One La Salle (OROFOLS) 3 at the Mall of Asia.

Pre-Race

This race served as a way to test our target pace for Run United 2 (RU2). The target for RU2 was 2:30 so that blogger buddy and pacer, CJ, can attain a PR for 21k. Unfortunately, we were winging it and hadn't trained properly to attain this pace.

Race Proper

I met CJ at the starting line since I was late for the assembly line. I found fellow Titan, Mark, and Ayala Triads, Moy. Gun started was earlier than expected. It was 30 seconds earlier based on my watch but it was okay since I wasn't late for the gun start.

Post Race wearing our Triads uniform

We really didn't have a plan on how to push for 7:00 min/km so as we ran as as we can. At the first kilometer, we did a pace at 5:50 mins/km. We were able to maintain a less than 7 mins/km for the first 4k but we slowed down and walked a little from 5km onwards. The scorching heat slowed us even further. We initially did 4-1 galloway but went even slower due to the heat. The road wasn't closed for the race so it was also annoying to find cars fighting off your position in the race.

August 12 at the SM Mall of Asia grounds, featuring a new category,
more prizes and exciting features.

Get ready to outrun yourself at the Rexona Run 2012 happening on August 12 at the SM Mall of Asia grounds.  A part of the Runrio Series, this year’s edition is bigger, with a new category, more prizes and exciting features that will bring running to a higher level.

Registration is ongoing until July 29 at Riovana stores in Bonifacio Global City and Katipunan, and Toby’s branches in Trinoma and SM Mall of Asia.  Online registrations are also accepted at www.runrio.com from now until 12 midnight of July 22.

Runners can choose to take part in the 5K, 21K Solo or, for the first time ever, the 21K Relay race category.  The top 3 finishers in the 21K Solo take home Php 7,000, 5,500, and 4,000; while Php 5,000, 4,000, and 3,000 will be awarded to each member of the top finishers in the 21K Relay division.  Finally, the top three finishers in the 5K category bring home Php 4,000 for first, 3,000 for second and 2,000 for third.

Adding excitement to the event is Rexona’s challenge for runners to beat the “industry standard,” wherein commemorative key chains will be given to finishers who end the race on or before the recommended finishing time.  To qualify, 5K runners must cross the finish line on or before 6:20am, 30 minutes from gun start and all 21K runners need to finish on or before 7:00am, 2 hours after gun start.

To ensure that each participant keeps within their target finishing time, pacers shall be deployed for each race category.

To help runners train and commit to a faster finishing time, Rexona Run 2012 has created the Rexona Run Outrun Yourself App, which can be downloaded for free via the Rexona Men Facebook page.  The app helps runners set a target time for the category to be run courtesy of a running playlist and an occasional voice over as their time check, which they can listen to while training.  During the actual run, the app can also be used to help runners set their pace.

Rexona will also encourage participants to be responsible runners by keeping race routes trash-free by placing trash bins in strategic locations for proper disposal of water bottles, sponges and other trash.  This ensures a cleaner race route now and in succeeding editions of Rexona Run.

Participants can choose from among three race categories: 5K, 21K Solo and for the first time ever, the 21K Relay.  The new category is designed to inspire 5K and 10K runners to raise their level by taking part in the more challenging 21K race, where a team of 2 runners will run a relay for them to finish the 21K distance.

Apart from cash prizes and medals for the top finishers, commemorative key chains will also be awarded to finishers who manage to beat the recommended finishing time for a challenge.  To qualify, 5K runners must cross the finish line 30 minutes after gun start at 6:20am, and all 21K participants need to finish within 2 hours at 7:00am.
