Bigger obstacles and a tougher course for this year’s Men’s Health Urbanathlon

Press Release

The country’s first obstacle laden race is back promising an even tougher course this 2013. The Men’s Health Urbanathlon is happening on September 29 at the SM Mall of Asia Grounds. This unique event combines the rigors of a run with the tough nature of traversing numerous obstacles in an urban setting.

Participants can choose to join either the 5, 10, or 21 KM categories. This year’s set of obstacles promises to challenge racers even more. Aside from the 8-foot wall, scaffolding maze, and monkey bars, you’ll have to go over an 8-foot container van, climb a 12-feet high rope, and conquer a 50-foot net stretched over a bus on your way to the finish line.

Registration for the event opens on August 1 and ends on September 25 at the following places: 360 Fitness Club Ortigas, Makati, and Quezon City, ROX at Bonifacio High Street, and Gold’s Gym in Alabang. To help prepare racers for this tough event, Men’s Health is also holding an Urbanathlon Boot Camp on August 7 and 14 at Mercato Centrale, Bonifacio Global City. Here you get to try the obstacles as well as get tips and sample workouts to help strengthen your resolve in time for race day.

Are you ready to become an Urbanathlete?

My MH Urbanathlon 2011 experience

MH Urbanathlon is the only run with obstacles in the Philippines so I didn't pass by the chance to join it. I planned to train for this one but I wasn't able to so I just winged it.

I ran with fellow urbanathlon newbies, Dom, Lee and JR. It was a fast paced run where we had to stop to do obstacles then do more face paced runs.

Obstacles and the Race

The first of which was the UP and Down Obstacle where we had to go up a block.

Up and Down Obstacle started with going up a block

Then, we had to crawl down a net.

Then we went up and down a platform.

Lastly, we had to jump over a hurdle. Then, went back to fast-paced running.

The next obstacle was the Scaffolding Race. We had to go up and down, testing our flexibility.

After more running, we jumped over hurdles near the British School of Manila.

The fourth Obstacle was the Monkey Bars presented by Century Tuna. I feared this one the most but the marshals helped me crossed this obstacle so it wasn't that difficult after all.

After more running, the last obstacle was the wall where we had to climb up a wall and climb back down before sprinting to the finish line.

Overall, it was great experience I would want to to again. According to people who ran the race last year, this year's urbanathlon was a great improvement. I will run this race again next year!

After the race, we met the other Pex Running Club members, Noah, Nollie and Cath to have breakfast with the runners who ran Unilab Run 3 and we had lunch at Gerry's (PRC's favorite hangout).

I love the medal's lanyard that I decided to use it in work everyday but I got 2 copies of November to January issues.
