Alaska Milk's Lastimosa joins Jr. NBA camp in Vietnam

Press Release

Alaska Milk Power Camp Director and Philippine basketball legend Jojo Lastimosa joins the National Training Camp of the Jr. NBA Presented by Dutch Lady Vietnam to be held July 13 to 15 at Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Dutch Lady and Alaska Milk Corporation are both under the FrieslandCampina family.

Lastimosa will be the lead assistant coach of basketball operations specialist for NBA Asia Chris Sumner who will run the camp.

"It’s a great opportunity for meto be able to share my knowledge of the game once again not only with my countrymen but now outside of Manila. I'm not only representing Alaska Milk, I'm also representing the Philippines. I'm aware that we have Filipino players playing for Vietnam but being able to teach there firsthand is awesome," said Lastimosa.

"My role in Vietnamwill be the same as in the Jr. NBA in the Philippines. I will help organize the camp and teach the local coaches on the skill stations. The objective is the same in all Jr. NBA camps: to find the best 10-14 year old players. But the most important part really is making the Vietnamese aware of how beautiful this game of basketball is," said Lastimosa.

The NBA’s international youth development program aims to promote participation in the sport of basketball, improve child fitness and teach the public the importance of proper nutrition especially of drinking milk.

Here in the Philippines, Alaska continues their partnership with Jr. NBA to help young boys, and girls, become better individuals and encourage them to embrace a healthy lifestyle by engaging regularly in sports activities and through proper nutrition. Under-nutrition also remains to be a public health concern affecting nearly three out 10 children.   Alaska recognizes the need of Filipino children for proper nutrition.  According to the 7th National Nutrition Survey done by the Food and Nutrition Research Institute and the Department of Health, obesity is increasing with nearly two out 10 children considered as overweight. Through the program, Alaska leads in promoting a healthy lifestyle, especially among children, through regular sports activities and proper nutrition through its leading brands, Alaska Powdered Milk Drink and Alaska Chocolate Powdered Milk Drink.
In the camp held in the Philippines Lastimosa drew from his personal experience as a former national basketball player and professional to teach the participants how to become not just the best basketball player but the best person that they could be.

The basketball clinics in Vietnam have already selected the top 40 boys and 24 girls, aged 10 to 14, who will participate in the National Training Camp. The camp will be attended by Boston Celtics center Kelly Olynyk who will teach the game in the NBA Cares community outreach. The camp covers a three-day intensive training schedule and will culminate in the selection of 14 boys and girls who will be named as the inaugural 2014 Jr. NBA Presented by Dutch Lady Vietnam All-Stars.

Eco-friendly tissue paper manufacturer organizes Run for Sustainability

Press Release

When business is linked to social conscience, seldom consumers appreciate the connections. But there
is one eco-friendly tissue paper manufacturer in the Philippines that for a decade now endures to
balance these two opposing principles. “We endure to strike a balance between profit and social
conscience,” says Quanta Paper Corporation president & general manager Steven Leung.

Founded on business principle of sustainable practices, Quanta Paper manufactures hygienic tissue
products using used office paper as raw materials instead of virgin fibers. This thrust is geared towards
preservation of world’s rainforest where deforestation remains a traditional practice in the paper
making industry to extract virgin fibers.

This August 10, 2014, the Company will launch its most aggressive green campaign in a form of a fun
run activity. The Run for Sustainability, or dubbed as R3RUN (Reuse, Reduce, Recycle Run) is
designed to inspire environmental action among Filipino consumers and raise awareness on climate
change. It also aims to educate consumers on the importance of green labelled products and how
patronizing them could help in a way to protect our planet.

Integrated through a healthy and fun lifestyle activity, the R3RUN serves both a strategic marketing
and social responsibility tools of the Company. “We would like to be more loudly in telling our story
of sustainable practices and at the same time capitalize in building our brand equity,” says Quanta
Paper corporate strategist and Race Committee head Neil Erich Galicia. The Company finds that most
Filipinos do not have enough knowledge on climate change and the threat that it poses to the country
and to the world. “The Run is a step forward to begin a bold and concrete action. In this way we could
start a wave that could reach through every corner of our archipelago.” He explained.

To be held at the BlueBay Walk, Edsa-Macapagal Avenue, Pasay City, the Run will be participated in
by around 10,000 runners. The activity and program venue will be inspired by an EcoVillage theme. It
will showcase some of the best environmental photo exhibits and social efforts both by the Company
and by its invited partners. The Company will also have a photo exhibit on how hygienic tissue is
produced from waste paper to its finished product. There will be games and other interactive activities
within the EcoVillage, all focused on environmental stewardship. The Company will also build a
Green Warrior Memorial in the EcoVillage to honor and remember those forest and sea rangers who
gave their lives fighting to protect and preserve the Philippines’ natural resources.

Participants will range from students, government officials and employees, artists and TV
personalities, corporate partners and green advocates. Part of the participants is Jasmine Curtis-Smith,
the Company’s brand endorser for its new sanitary napkin product.

There will be four race categories, namely 1km and 4km (carrying the Company’s sanitary napkin
brand, Perfect), and 8km (carrying the Company’s institutional brand, Eco-Hygiene), and 12km
(carrying the Company’s flagship brand, Fresh).

The registration period will start on June 5 and end on July 22, 2014, opens every Thursday thru
Sunday. Registration venues will be at Runnr Bonifacio High Street, Runnr Trinoma, Toby’s Shangri-
La, Toby’s Mall of Asia, and Toby’s Robinson Manila. Registration fee is at Php 250 inclusive of
Running Shirt, Race Bib, Route Map and product samples of the Company. First 2,500 students who
register can avail a Php 150 discounted rate The appointed race organizer by the Company is Cosmic
Gate Innovations Co.

Proceeds of this event will support the Company’s continued social responsibility efforts.

Alaska World Milk Day

Press Release

Healthy, Set, Go!

Alaska celebrates World Milk Day on June 1 with a simultaneous milk-drinking activity nationwide; a family charity run in BGC; health and fitness programs in Baguio, Cebu and Davao; and an online milk moustache advocacy project

On June 1, the country will celebrate Alaska World Milk Day for the second time. Spearheaded by the  Philippines’ leading milk company Alaska Milk Corporation, the celebration promises to be bigger and better than the fete last year, which gathered more than 3,000 participants in its fun run and raised the same number of milk products for the feeding program of Children’s Hour and its partner organizations.

This year, Alaska World Milk Day goes nationwide with a simultaneous milk-drinking activity in Baguio, Cebu, Davao and Metro Manila at 7:30 am, projected to gather thousands of participants. There will also be simultaneous fitness classes in the three provinces to encourage individuals and families to start a morning health and fitness regimen: Zumba + power breakfast of Alaska powdered milk paired with champorado drizzled with Alaska Evaporated Milk, pandesal filled with Alaska Condensed milk, and cereals with Alaska Fresh Milk. The power breakfast are given free to participants at the event area as part of the “Alaska Gatas for Breakfast” campaign, which will be held for the first time this year. The campaign aims to get everyone to start the day right with a nutritious breakfast.

This effort to foster a healthy consciousness among individuals and families—through the combination of exercise and proper nutritious—is Alaska’s way in helping the government fight against the increasing number of obese children and adults in the country. According to the Department of Health (DOH) and the Department of Science and Technology—Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI), obesity is one of the most prevalent nutritional problems of Filipino children and adults. At least 16 million Filipinos 20 years old and above, and two out of 10 children are overweight.

In Manila, the same Alaska power breakfast is given to the participants of the Alaska Family charity run that will benefit Children’s Hour, a fundraising organization that encourages individuals and companies for donations of at least one hour's worth of their earnings for programs dedicated to make the lives of disadvantaged children better. Aimed at getting today's children and their parents to get off their couch, leave their gadgets for the day and engage in physical activity, the Alaska Family Run will be held at the Bonifacio Global City. For every participant, Alaska will be donating milk products to the organization for its feeding program.

Everyone is encouraged to join the “Gatas for Breakfast” campaign and help combat obesity and malnutrition in the country by posting their photos with a milk moustache online with the hashtags #alaskaworldmilkday,  #WMD2014, #MilkSelfie and #GatasForBreakfast - especially during the breakfast activity at 7:30 am of June 1.

The Alaska World Milk Day celebration is part of Alaska’s continuing advocacy toward health and nutrition, particularly its Nutrition. Action. Champion campaign. For more information, log on to www.alaskaworldmilkday.com and like www.facebook.com/WorldMilkDayPH
