Is the GNC Fitness Throwdown for Beginners too?

New Friends from GNC and WOD Nation had contacted me about their upcoming event at Alabang, Makati and Quezon City tagged as GNC Fitness Throwdown. I, initially, thought that it will be an event like the Reebok CrossFit games. So, not a place for people who don't do CrossFit.

But I asked the organizers if this event is exclusively for Cross Fitters and they told me that they planned to include beginners in the event by placing a category for us (RX for Beginners). This category will perform a surprise set of exercises that would be "easier" than the series of activities that the regular cross fitters will perform. It will be a good venue for someone to see how well we'll fare in general fitness so I would recommend trying this event out. Sample exercises may include Burpees, Box Jumps and the like that will be performed within a given time.

On another note, there will be another category for those who are already Cross Fitters (RX+ Advanced) so this event is also for you. And in a sense, this will be like the Reebok Cross Fit games.

Kyle de Leon (WOD Nation) says that the purpose of this event is to involve everyone into fitness by giving them a taste of weight lifting, body control (gymnastics) and of course conditioning as facets that CrossFit exemplifies. GNC Throwdown involves a different physical toughness event that will test our individual GPP (General Physical Preparedness).

GNC Throwdown event will be held on April 28 (Alabang Town Center), May 24 (Glorietta) and June (Trinoma). Registration can be done at any GNC Store in Metro Manila. The registration fee is P1,000. Registrants will receive an event shirt, Gatorade Sports Drink, GNC Arm Band and a City Watch Emergency Response Membership Card.

Details can be found on this post.

My First Official Trail Run at the Salomon Xtrail Run 2013

The Salomon Xtrail Run 2013 is an annual run organized by the top brand for trail running parapernalia, Salomon Philippines. This year, they promised to be the most technical trail run of the season. On March 23 at the Hamilo Coast, Pico de Loro, Nasugbu, Batangas, I joined this event as my first official trail running event.

Pre Race

I shunned trail runs because of the possibility of getting myself and my shoes dirty. (Ewww, putik) But last year, I had no choice but to run in the trails of Wilmington, Delaware. So I grown an appreciation for trail running and I even bought myself trail running shoes. The longest I ran on those running trails was 10k. It was difficult and my body was aching all over the following day but the trail made me stronger. I wouldn't leave road races but I opened myself up to joining trail runs. (Ibang usapan yung mud/putik run, magsolo na kayo duon. Cheerer na lang ako!)

Arriving at Pico de Loro

When my friends invited me to join the Salomon XTrail Run, I was easily swayed to registering since I'll be running with them and that should be fun. We even registered together para sunod sunod ang number sa race bib.

Sunod sunod... YEY!

Timex Endorsers

Unfortunately, pre-registration lang pala ang onsite registration so no race kit when we registered. A few days before the race, we saw ads in Salomon's FB page and we claimed our race kits in ROX at sunod sunod naman ang number sa race bibs. (YEY!)

Actual Race

The race venue was a 3 hour drive from Manila and with a gun start at 5am, we left Manila at around 1am. We rented a van good for 10 people and headed to Batangas armed with an Iphone 5 GPS app. I was seated on a seat not suitable for a nap so I chatted with Lee and KC the whole trip. This was my first official trail run and the first running event with very little sleep (nakatulog ako ng 1 hour before heading to our departure point). Since Bata was running 24km, we arrived there before the 5am gun start. We used the time to take some pictures and have a pre-run snack (Buko Pie na prinamis ni MJ 1 year ago). At 5:30am, it was Kay's turn to her 12km gun start. We then took more pictures at the beach since the sun was already up at that time.

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC CHANNEL BEEFS UP SECURITY FOR EARTH DAY RUN

In anticipation of one of the Philippines’ biggest annual running events, National Geographic Channel is cooperating with local law enforcement and local government to beef up security for Earth Day Run 2013 on April 28, 2013 at Bonifacio Global City. The channel has broken Earth Day Run’s previous record of 10,000 participants and is working hard to ensure the safety of the 12,000 runners registered this year.

In order to assure participants a safe and pleasurable running experience, National Geographic Channel is taking the necessary steps to address safety concerns and secure the race route. Hundreds of members of the police force and K9 units will be deployed at the venue, and National Geographic Channel is employing dozens of additional race marshalls along with increasing its medical staff and ambulances on call. They are also putting up more barricades and more water stations to protect the runners and help them stay in top condition during the course of the race.

“Let’s not put our guards down. Let’s be vigilant in protecting our runners. We must let all our runners cross the finish line safely,” said Police Chief Superintendent and District Director Gen. Jose Erwin T. Villacorte from the Southern Police District.

The Nat Geo Earth Day Run is consistently one of the biggest running events in the Philippines, beginning in 2010 with 6,000 runners and gaining the participation of 10,000 runners in each of the last two years. This year, 10,000 more runners, young and old, are expected to participate in the Earth Day Run to show their support for the rehabilitation of the environment and a greener future.

Now on its fourth year, Earth Day Run is giving participants the chance to green the planet by promising to plant three trees in each registered runner’s name.

Run United 2013: First of three - DONE!

Run United is no stranger to a serious runner's calendar and this year's trilogy began with Run United 1 2013 at the SM Mall of Asia grounds last March 17, 2013.

Pre Race

After completing my first marathon in TBRDM, I was planning on doing smaller races, aiming to be faster but then I decided to complete the Run United trilogy (at nang maka-graduate na dito). However completing the trilogy means I have to do more long distance races so I refined my goal to getting a PR for my second marathon at the conclusion of the Run United 2013 series. (Ayan dineclare ko na! Dapat magka-totoo.)

Photo from Mang Husi

This race came shortly after my marathon so I didn't have time really train to break my 2:24 21k PR but I still tried. A week after my recovery week. I tried doing Jeff Galloway's magic mile training (Check out his training plan book for more details). Nanibago pa ako kasi long slow ang training sa TBRDM. I was still adjusting and here comes race day.

Actual Race

I like doing races in MOA since it's easier to commute to. I could ride the jeep and wouldn't need a ride a taxi cab since the jeep is near my residence. But RU1 runners are more serious than I thought. 30 minutes before gun start they are already at the race venue. I tried to ride a jeep to MOA but the rest of the 5k++ half marathon runners didn't dare to be late. I opted to ride a taxi cab to try to reach the gun start but I ended up almost 12 minutes late.

Photo from Active Moments

I saw Mommy Vimz aka Kulit Runner at the starting line and waving hello to her was my gun start. I tried to target another PR so I did Galloway's Magic Mile all through out. This composed of a little faster than your race pace for half a mile then walking for 10 feet then going all out for the rest. I was channeling running idol barefoot daves at that time (Late man, nakakahabol din) as I was able to reach the middle of the half  marathon runners by the turn around point. I saw some friends from Pex Running Club pero mabilis talaga yung ibang running friends eh.

Share your passion for fitness: Promo for the Amazing Pinoy Run

One of the goals of the Amazing Pinoy Fun Run is to get more people in the road to overall fitness. Chris and Andrew (first name basis?) emphasized that they wanted to promote fitness so they came up with this race. The Amazing Pinoy Fun Run is a mixture of fun run and Pinoy themed challenges aimed to excite regular and newbie runners.

In line with this goal let me first address a question from fellow blogger Michy.

Michy asks "how does a newbie start running?". I am no expert on running but I will answer this question based on my experience. I started running by doing walk-runs for 30 mins. As my body got used to running, I do less walks and more runs. (E.g.: I start doing 1 min walk and 1 run intervals. After a week, I progress to 1 min walk and 2 min run interval) I did this until I am able to run for 30 mins. If you are already doing regular exercise, you could skip to longer run intervals.

Here is a link to a newbie program to your first 5k run: Couch to 5k program

On April 27 May 25, Amazing Pinoy Fun Run will happen at BGC, Taguig City and with the help of Event Logic, we are giving away 2 free race kits.

To qualify for this promo, just tell us how you shared your passion for fitness on the comments section. Then, put your name, address and preferred race distance (2k/5k/10k).
